Tuesday, Afternoon Advanced

Hi advanced guys and gals,

Post one of my advanced class experiment. Let me know if you think this will be useful or not. Don't be afraid to comment.

We started with a bit of sound awareness - which you all felt very challenged by. That's not a bad thing! We talked about how the Irish and most north American accents are rhotic, or the vowels are 'r-coloured'. I hope this has helped you see where some of your pronunciation errors are happening. Here's a link to an interactive phonemic chart and if you didn't get the smart phone app you'll find it by searching Macmillan Sounds Pronunciation. Enjoy!

We also spoke about the difference between Irish and British accents with reference to the 'r-coloured' vowels - here's a clip from a British comedy show The IT Crowd - can you hear the difference between their accents?

(You're not actually supposed to understand what the second guy is talking about by the way!)

Pronunciation game

We did a quick quiz on feeling lucky but we didn't do it individually - have a look at these statements and work out your score.

Luck survey

We moved on to modals of deduction in the past and present then. We listened to three people talk about events or experiences in the past and speculate about the people involved must have felt.

Modals of deduction / speculation in the past.

Now, here are the results of the survey - what do you think? Comment below, all welcome!

Thanks for reading, let me know how this works for you.

  1. I scored low on the first section, I worry a bit too much sometimes..But I scored highly in the other sections. I think I'm very lucky - I have a job I love at a time when a lot of people don't have any work. I left a job I hated to come here. And you guys are my students - I couldn't be any luckier really! ;)

  2. I scored low on the second section. I think it is not easy to me to distinguish between intutions and reasons. Usually, I listen more to my head because my feelings could be distort easily by feeling hunger or sleepy.
Is this really important for being lucky? I feel (sort of) lucky, anyway :)
